there are two kinds of people

those who love the repeat settings on a cd player/ipod/etc, and those who don't.

When a song worms its way into my head, it's the only song I want to hear. I have been known to keep a normal length song on repeat for up to an hour... This is fine if I'm driving alone, but doesn't always work so well when I am with others. Steve is fairly patient (up to about the third repeat...) but the kids are less so...

I've always loved music, I get completely drawn in to music that catches me. Conversely, I react physically to music I dislike - like opera. When subjected to particulary shrill opera, I curl into a defensive ball and/or look for the closest exit. Infinite tolerance for music I like, zero tolerance for music I don't.

I usually will listen to a cd at a time, and don't often get into these "repeat" moods. But once in a while, a song will hit a particular resonance, and I'm lost in it til it lets me go....

I think I'm totally with your kids on this one, I can't stand hearing the same song on repeat. The closest thing I do, is always go to a certain track on a CD to start off then listen to the rest of the CD after that.
My brother loves doing it your way though, should see some of the play counts of his favorite songs!

I can't play the same song over and over again, but I usually put the one or two songs I like the most at the moment in my playlist several times. I usually repeat those songs after I played 2 or 3 other songs. This way I get the repeat effect, as well as variation.

I'm totally with you on this one. Except that I also need long periods of silence. I have to be listening to music or not. Background music is an oxymoron. Turn it up or turn it off. And repeat, repeat, repeat....

I actually go through a lot of work to prevent excessive repeats on my iPod. To the point of having multi-tiered nested playlists.

I do have those moments when I'd like to hear a particular song a few times. If it's on my Nano today, I can have at it. If it's not in the main Mix playlist, though, It's not likely to happen.

Can you believe I still don't have an ipod? But I'm with you on the repeat. My kids aren't old enough to care yet though ;o)

So I stumbled upon your blog whilst researching how Notes 8 uses help and found this post while listening to Radiohead's new offering on a continuous loop... Too trippy.

(My kids can listen to a song over and over again.)

And are there really only 10 kinds of people? It seems... so... binary. :)
